How Does the Atkins Diet Work?

The Atkins Diet recently gained national attention and popularity due to the extreme simplicity of its regulations, and the rapid weight loss experienced by its participants.  National food chains and restaurants have already started incorporating Atkins’ diet friendly options on their menus, and fans of the diet are proudly showing off their slimmed down selves to friends and family.  Also, the Atkins diet differs from many others in its significant support network, offering online discussion groups and classes for participants to share tips, information, and success stories.

The Atkins diet is high in protein, fiber, vitamins & minerals.  It does not require any pre-cooked meals or specific product purchases (although these are available).  It is alos low in sugar, and comparatively low in trans fat with other diet products.   The Atkins diet is structured around the concept that by initially drastically limiting your carbohydrate intake-phase 1 of the 4 phase program only allows 20 grams daily-you jump-start your metabolism, switching over to burning fats, which creates dramatic weight loss results. As you continue through the phases and get cloeser to your goal weight, you slowly add back healthy carbohydrates.

Phase 1: Induction

This is the beginning phase of the Atkins diet, which lasts 14 days and involves the dramatic reductions of carbohydrates to just 20 grams a day.  (Until you’ve tried it, it is almost impossible to imagine how little that is.)  Of course, you can start the Atkins diet at any one of the phases, but completing the induction phase is essential to seeing rapid results.  Some obstacles to beware of in Phase 1 are that carbohydrates exist in alot more foods than just bread.  In fact, some greens and starchy vegetables are the primary source of carbs in most individual’s diets.

Phase 2: On-Going Weight Loss (OWL)

After completing the first two weeks, you want to settle into a routine that allows ongoing weight loss at a steady rate until your have reached your target weight.  Phase 2, On-Going Weight Loss or ‘OWL,’ allows the gradual addition of nutrient-rich carbs.   The key words here are ‘gradual’ and ‘nutrient rich’-you still can’t go crazy.  To continue losing weight, high carbohydrate foods (bread and rice etc) are not recommended.  In phase 2, 25 Net carbs are allowed daily. The Atkins diet doesn’t follow any specific recipes or meal plan restrictions. Rather it relies on the individual to mix and match nutritious foods, personalizing their own individual weight loss program.

Phase 3: Maintenance

The third dieting phase is Maintenance, and begins after, or shortly before, you have reached your target weight.  Once you no longer need to drop weight and are interested in simply maintaining your present weight, you can add even more carbs slowly back into your diet, increasing by 10 grams of net carbs a week.  Of course, you only keep adding as long as you reamin at your target weight.  If you being adding weight, again, cut the carbohydrates down slowly once more.  Every individual is different, so pay attention and personlize your own weight program, maintaining a diet with the level of carbs that is just right for you as an individual. Atkins specialists suggest that you remain in the Maintenance phase until your goal weight has been reached and maintained for 1 month.  In this phase, there are also a plethora of convenient and nutritious Atkins products that can be incorporated to reduce your cravings.

Phase 4: Lifetime Maintenance

In the final phase 4,  Lifetime Maintenance, you simply continue the eating plan that has got you to your fabulous new self.   Utilize the eating habits and self-control that have brought you to this point to enjoy your new healthy lifestyle, increased energy and self-confidence. Most individuals who reach Phase 4 enjoy the knowledge that they taken charge of their life, and ruled their cravings in order to obtain what they truly wanted from life. On going participation in the weight management classes and discussion groups offered online will help provide continual motivation and avoid relapse.

Success With the Atkins Diet

Wow! Katie Dropped 6 Sizes, 34 lbs!katie Katie B. Age: 33

Total Lost: 34 lbs

“I heard about it from a friend. She had lost 40 pounds and recommended it to me,” Katie said.”She had heard about it from her mother who had lost three dress sizes. … I wasn’t sure how an internet weight-loss program would work, but it worked for her mother and it worked for her so I decided to give it a shot. I needed something.”

“The eDiets.com recipes were much faster and tasted fresher. It really saved me time. The shopping lists were extraordinarily convenient. In the past, I’d just kind of roam around the grocery store and I’d pick up things. There was really no rhyme or reason to it. With the shopping list, I went to the grocery store and bought what was written there in front of me and then I left.”
