Definition: A Low Carbohydrate diet is one that is structured to either eliminate or drastically reduce the average individual’s consumption of carbohydrates, which are found in  high amounts in many common foods like bread, potatoes, rice, tortillas and even in certain vegetables such as carrots, corn, tomatoes and beans.

Why People Like Them: The primary reason people like Low-Carb diets is that their are almost instantly successful. Rapid results can be seen in as few as 14 days.  Another major perk of a low-carb diet is that, theoretically, anything goes as far as food consumptions, as long as it isn’t carbs.  All you have to do is learn what foods are high in carbohydrates, and as long as you avoid them, you can eat as much as you want, as often as you want.  However, you can still amass calories from non-carbohydrate foods, and at the end of the day, if you still consume more calories than you burn, you won’t lose weight, the most common mistake Low-Carb dieters make.   But since most individuals consume the vast majority of their calories in carbs, weight loss from cutting or eliminating carbs is drastic, and immediate.

Why They Work: As a society, our high consumption of carbs can be traced back to historical roots, when our ancestors were farmers and manual laborers.  Our body is structured to rapidly convert Carbohydrates to sugars which serve as “fuel” or an energy source for the body. Because they can be accessed to burn quickly before they are turned into fats, a high-carbohydrate diet was a survival neccesity for those who were completely long, hard days of manual labor.  Meat and potatoes with bread on the side were common elements of meals found in every society of laborers.  However, the amount of physical effort most individuals are required to put forth to sustain a living has been drastically reduced, and people as a whole have become much more sedentary.  Unfortunately, we still love to eat foods the way grandma and great-grandma cooked them.  High carbohydrate diets are comforting and normal to the average American. However, we don’t go out and burn them felling timber or plowing fields, we go sit at our desk after lunch.  When you lower and change the amount of carbohydrates you consume, your body essentially raises its metabolism, or changes it, and once your body stops getting carbs to burn, it changes to burning stored fast that it has tucked away for a rainy day. Usually right around your belt buckle.

Recently coming to national and international prominence, the Atkins Diet is the most famous Low-Carb diet of them all.  The Atkins diet offers a structured approach to eliminating carbohydrates that lasts through four different phases.   The initial phase, induction, is where the primary weight loss gets its jump-start, as dieters are instructed to eliminate all carbs except for 20 grams a day.   As they gradually move thru the phases as they approach and meet their weight loss goals, participants of the Atkins diet gradually add carbs back into their daily diet (but remain far from their pre-diet consumption levels) as long as they can maintain their goal weight.  The Atkin’s diet is  high in protein (which can be a challenge to vegetarians), fiber, vitamins & minerals.   Due to it’s low sugar content it is especially effective for those with Type 2 Diabetes.
